I know you shouldn’t judge, but one of the things I love best about books are their covers. To me, books are more than a story. They’re an artefact. The most exciting books are aware of this, play with this, and generally exploit their bookishness.

I really don’t have a favourite opening scene. Opening scenes are rarely the ones that make the biggest impression on me, since you haven’t had any time to properly bond with the characters. How deeply can you be invested in their lives when you don’t know them yet?

I kept a copy of Dreams Underfoot by Charles de Lint in my car, when I had a car. I carried it around in my backpack when I was in High School. I read it cover to cover millions of times, and even dropped it in the bath once. It is one dog-eared, well loved book.

Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot is, hands down, my favourite book of poetry. This isn’t a difficult choice because it’s also one of the few books of poems I’ve actually read, but I was given it when I was a kid and it’s still on my bookshelf, so that says something, right?

Ah… comfort books. Like a hot cup of tea, tomato soup or a down comforter, their snugly goodness will ease life’s rough edges enough to make it bearable. With a severe frost warning in effect and news anchors muttering about snow, this is the perfect day to talk comfort books. Also my birthday balloon ride got cancelled again. For the fifth time.
