testing, 1… 2…

First posts are always so awkward. I never know what to say, or where to hold my hands, or whether or not it’s acceptable to chew gum. I never know what the best opening gambit is – a hello-this-is-me fest or a hello-this-is-my-work fest, or if I should say nothing and instead make you look at a picture of a cute basset hound puppy.

So I’ll do a little of all of it.

Unsurprisingly, I’m Mari Fee. I’m a professional history nerd, tea-lovin’ and fancy free. I live with my very romantic boyfriend and write stories in my spare time.

I started writing in PbEMs (play by email games) in which you make up a character and, with other writers, plot and write stories for them. PbEMs are great. They teach you how to build a character, a world, and little things like grammar and pacing. I also met some of my dearest internet friends on PbEMs, because nothing bonds you like plotting mayhem at 3am.

I’ve been digging the steampunk for a while now. I think it started when I read “Perdido Street Station” by China Mieville, which is a fantastically dark, twisted and utterly original read. Then I discovered Girl Genius, an online gaslamp fantasy comic starring a bushel of mad scientists with wacky hair. Kenneth Oppel’s “Airborne” and Cherie Priest’s “Boneshaker” soon followed, and I was hooked.

And then I wrote my own little steampunk romance novella, which has been contracted to Samhain Publishing.

And here we are.

With a basset.
