Book Meme: Day 02

Day 02 – A book or series you wish more people were reading and talking about

Oh man. I’ve read so many good books lately, but I think more people should read The Manual of Detection by Jedediah Berry.

It’s so seriously good.

It was so good, in fact, that I bought it in hardcover before I’d even read it, and I don’t regret my purchase one bit.

An unnamed city where it’s always raining, where the alarm clocks have gone missing, where Charles Unwin finds himself promoted from secretary to detective at an unnamed detective agency, where dreaming and wakefulness aren’t all that different after all…

This book was a breath of fresh air, a noir adventure populated with familiar-yet-strange archetypes and delicious turns of phrase. I’m amazed at Mr. Berry’s imagination, and better yet – his ability to write something so utterly, fantabulously surreal that is still somehow believable.

This is the type of book I want to write someday, something engrossing, beautiful, funny and strange all at once. It’s comfort food for my odd little soul.

Read it. I’m almost certain you’ll like it, except for those of you who won’t.
