Book Meme: Day 07

Day 07 – Least favorite plot device employed by way too many books you actually enjoyed otherwise

I’m not a fan of “Chosen Ones”.

Seriously, writers. That’s lazy plotting. I’m far more interested in people who do because they have to than people who do because they’re destined to do it.

Chosen Ones are often whiney. Why meeeeeeeee? Why do IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII have to do it? I prefer a character that buckles down and gets’er done because nobody else will.

Chosen Ones are often too powerful. Characters who have to plot, plan, finagle, cheat and lie to win make for a more compelling read than characters with the magical (or otherwise) equivalent of a military tank.

And, quite frankly, I hate the idea that Someone Will Save Us. Call me a cynic, but that’s not how the world works. There is no white knight, no prophesy, no benevolent uncle or big brother that’s going to come in and make our utopia. Our future is in our hands, and we have to step up and make it what we want it to be. Fiction that reflects this bias sits much better with me than (most) stories that revolve around a Chosen One.

That being said, I do enjoy books that employ this – like the Obernewtyn books, Juniper, and …. Harry Potter.
