Book Meme: Day 27

Day 27 – If a book contains ______, you will always read it (and a book or books that contain it)!

This ties into the last post, in which I mentioned that if a book contains a medly of love, sex, death, revenge, murder and art, I`m so there. Also ghosts. And especially art. I love books that talk about art and aesthetics not from a pretentious art-is-precious frou-frou angle, but from passionate artists who live and breathe what they create. Like Humility Garden, who sacrifices her Beau to art… and also for her own life, but whatever.

Like Davis Cooper and Anna Naverra in The Wood Wife, whose own work drives them into death.

Like lonely little T.S. Spivot who compulsively maps his life in an attempt to understand the world and his place in it.

Like Nicholas Flood in Salamander, who breathes books the way other people breathe air.

Sure, books with artists often have them come off as pretentious hippy-drippy idiots who worship Art and yet somehow only talk about it, but I`ll probably read it anyway. Deal with it.

I`m also a sucker for books that have archaeologists. Usually archaeologists are portrayed either as pot hunters in academic clothing or as stuffy British sorts who have a Facination with the Past, and neither of these types is my experience of it. But I`ll probably read the book anyway, just to criticise and feel superior.

What… like you don`t judge. 😛

Finally, a good Gothic novel with ghosts, murders and hopefully either twins or an insane family member always make me squee. Like Shadow of the Wind. Great book.
